AVP Manhattan Beach Open Volleyball Tournament – Manhattan Beach

AVP Hermosa Beach Event

Manhattan Beach is considered the “crown jewel” of beach volleyball, and the fans that show up to cheer these athletes on are the most knowledgeable on the circuit.

Beach Volleyball in the South Bay is serious business, it underpins the ebb and flow of summertime recreation for the athletically minded weekend warrior and the well heeled, seasoned pro. The heat will be blazing hot for this weekend’s tournament in more ways than one. Cash prize for both male and female contenders is at stake.

The community of Manhattan Beach loves this event. Besides navigating the crowded Strand, many people duck into Shellback’s or Ercoles for a cold beer to escape from the South Bay sun for a few minutes. The AVP Manhattan Beach Open is FREE for general admission and court-side seats. It will definitely fill up early on Sunday for the mens’ and womens’ Final matches.

The South Bay is famous for its beach volleyball roots and history, and many of the sports’ stars live and train here year-round. One of Hermosa’s most popular local celebrities is Kerri Walsh, who won the gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers won the 2009 Open.

The tournament is always one of the most popular weekends in the South Bay, and Manhattan Beach swells with people from Thursday all the way to Sunday. Parking is nearly impossible and the bars are packed along the Strand and Pier by noon, especially Shark’s Cove, Shellbacks and Hennesey’s. Plan accordingly and consider parking and cabbing it from nearby Redondo Beach or Hermosa Beach. There will be a public shuttle running from Northrop Grumman (One Space Park Redondo Beach) to Vons (410 Manhattan Beach Boulevard) on Saturday from 8 am to 7 pm and Sunday from 7am to 6pm.
