The second location for Chevron’s California oil refinery is scenically located between Santa Monica Bay and LAX where right against an odoriferous array of middle class America sits El Segundo. Within this small town hamlet sleeps a gold mine of unique restaurants, bars, and personalities. Known locally as the “Gundo”, it’s almost more of a state of mind than an unincorporated town, but that’s where you’ll find SBE’s restaurant of the month for April. The Richmond Bar and Grill is a no fuss all thrills, cash only bar that serves hard to find microbrews, hot dog sandwiches, and homemade potato chips. Classically located on El Segundo’s Historic Richmond Street in close proximity to the Old Town Music Hall, The Richmond Bar and Grill feels like it’s a million miles away from all the industry that surrounds this El Segundo icon. The nostalgic feeling on the inside is kept afloat with all the various types of antique memorabilia & Americana, especially around the bar. Here, the bar-stools swivel all the way around and wooded décor feels simple and family like.

There’s a wide selection of craft beer, some in bottles, others from the tap. Local favorites from The Strand Brewery can be found here as a well as brews from Anchor Steam’s Liberty Ale, Arrogant Bastard, and other hard to find suds that lean toward the amber & stout side of the keg. The meals here are like the service, quick & tasty. Order from the hamburger or hot dog side and leave room for some homemade potato chips, there’s a reason people like to talk about them. The lunch-time crowd is heavy so try Richmond Bar and Grill at night or on the weekend to fully appreciate its “Gundo” like style and grace.
